Healthy NutritionFoods to Make You Smile
Most dentists and hygienists tell their patients that a healthy diet is one of the best ways to avoid dental caries. While this is good advice, making actual recommendations about positive food choices can make the point more clearly.
For instance, cranberries, peanuts, tea, some diary cheeses, and other high fiber foods have been shown to stop dental caries (cavities) from forming. Berries, especially cranberries (and blueberries to a lesser extent), reduce the attachment of caries-forming bacteria to the surfaces of the teeth. Apples contain compounds that reduce decay and green and black teas contain natural fluoride that reduces the growth of the bacteria that causes decay.
Fibrous plant foods like beans, broccoli, and chickpeas also help prevent caries by increasing the mouth’s saliva production. This in turn increases saliva’s pH, and can ward off decay-causing bacteria.
Moderate consumption of cheese will also protect your teeth. Due to its calcium content, cheese appears to prevent mineral loss of dental enamel. It also increases salivary rate and flow.
Some foods however, will increase harmful bacterial activity in the mouth. These include chocolate, honey, and licorice. The sugar in these foods tends to increase the pH of saliva and promote an environment where decay-causing bacteria can live and multiply.
By simply adjusting some of your food consumption, you can have a positive impact on your overall health — and prevent unnecessary decay of your teeth.
