Heart Surgeon Admits Huge Mistake!

Heart Attack We physicians with all our training, knowledge and authority often acquire a rather large ego that tends to make it difficult to admit we are wrong.  So, here it is.  I freely admit to being wrong.  As a heart surgeon with 25 years experience, having performed over 5,000 open-heart surgeries, today is my day to right the wrong with medical and scientific fact.

I trained for many years with other prominent physicians labeled “opinion makers.”  Bombarded with scientific literature, continually attending education seminars, we opinion makers insisted heart disease resulted from the simple fact of elevated blood cholesterol.

The only accepted therapy was prescribing medications to lower cholesterol and a diet that severely restricted fat intake.  The latter of course we insisted would lower cholesterol and heart disease.  Deviations from these recommendations were considered heresy and could quite possibly result in malpractice.

It Is Not Working!

These recommendations are no longer scientifically or morally defensible.  The discovery a few years ago that inflammation in the artery wall is the real cause of heart disease is slowly leading to a paradigm shift in how heart disease and other chronic ailments will be treated.

The long-established dietary recommendations have created epidemics of obesity and diabetes, the consequences of which dwarf any historical plague in terms of mortality, human suffering and dire economic consequences.

Despite the fact that 25% of the population takes expensive statin medications and despite the fact we have reduced the fat content of our diets, more Americans will die this year of heart disease than ever before.

Statistics from the American Heart Association show that 75 million Americans currently suffer from heart disease, 20 million have diabetes and 57 million have pre-diabetes. These disorders are affecting younger and younger people in greater numbers every year.

Simply stated, without inflammation being present in the body, there is no way that cholesterol would accumulate in the wall of the blood vessel and cause heart disease and strokes.  Without inflammation, cholesterol would move freely throughout the body as nature intended.  It is inflammation that causes cholesterol to become trapped.

Inflammation is not complicated — it is quite simply your body’s natural defense to a foreign invader such as a bacteria, toxin or virus.  The cycle of inflammation is perfect in how it protects your body from these bacterial and viral invaders.  However, if we chronically expose the body to injury by toxins or foods the human body was never designed to process, a condition occurs called chronic inflammation. Chronic inflammation is just as harmful as acute inflammation is beneficial.

What thoughtful person would willfully expose himself repeatedly to foods or other substances that are known to cause injury to the body?  Well, smokers perhaps, but at least they made that choice willfully.

The rest of us have simply followed the recommended mainstream diet that is low in fat and high in polyunsaturated fats and carbohydrates, not knowing we were causing repeated injury to our blood vessels.  This repeated injury creates chronic inflammation leading to heart disease, stroke, diabetes and obesity.  Let me repeat that. The injury and inflammation in our blood vessels is caused by the low fat diet that has been recommended for years by mainstream medicine.

What are the biggest culprits of chronic inflammation? Quite simply, they are the overload of simple, highly processed carbohydrates (sugar, flour and all the products made from them) and the excess consumption of omega-6 vegetable oils like soybean, corn and sunflower that are found in many processed foods.

In Part 2 of this two-part article, I’ll discuss which foods cause inflammation, how those foods trigger the inflammatory process, and the foods to eat that will cure inflammation.

It is refreshing to see someone admit their mistake. It is AMAZING to see more and more doctors admit that current medical advice is making people sick. I look forward to reading part 2.

We applaud your courageous stance. The medical establishment, which includes you, has followed what appears to be erroneous dogma for decades, and to break from that requires fortitude and leadership.

We sincerely wish and hope that more of your peers and colleagues will follow your example and question the facts rather than be politically correct and accept the orthodox dietary beliefs.

The doctor communicates an important message, and I’m thankful someone with his credentials has spoken out. I’m also delighted that in his second article he points to grassfed beef as a good source of protein.

I do the caveman diet or, as it is also called, the Paleo Diet. Meat, cheeses, butter, sprouts and vegetables with an occasional Avocado. I feel healthier than when I ate carbos, I’ve lost weight (I used to weigh 360 lbs.+ and no9w I am under 220lbsw and getting lower still. My goal is about 175 - 180) and my sex drive has returned from wherever it was hiding at before, lol. NO carbs - no breads, sugars or pastries and very little fruit, if that, unless you call an Avocado a fruit. No more insulin spikes, no more damage to my pancreas, just HEALTH! Good old HEALTH and I LOVE it!!!

  8. Ronnie says:

Can anyone suggest how one is going to eat to be full when no rice or bread (made fr Hi-Carbs flour)accompanies the dishes served esp. in most Asians and East Asians countries. For decades, the diet served at millions, if not billions of homes and in restaurants are a combination of rice, bread and an array of so called side or complimentary dishes, be it vegetables, poultry, seafood or cattle cooked in their respective recipe.
If everyone is to revert to the Caveman diet as Mr Bogdan suggests (pun not intended as I believed in the revelations), then it would be a herculean task to revamp the way food is served, not forgetting the enormous costs as well.

  9. Tom Bedneff says:

R U Aware, the Arizona Medical Board REVOKED Dr. Lundell’s medical license? BE CAREFUL!

  10. Dr. Bruce says:

After almost 40 years in medicine, I appreciate what Dr. Lundell is doing.

If, in fact, Dr. Lundell no longer practices in Arizona, and if, in fact, his license was revoked, then there is more than one possible explanation.

Mr. Bedneff’s comment seems to imply that only a bad doctor has their license revoked. This isn’t necessarily so, particularly in modern times. These days, doctors must tow the party line of the AMA and giant pharmaceutical companies or risk losing their license.

Anyone going against current medical dogma regarding cholesterol (as Dr. Lundell is doing) risks censure and possible loss of their license.

The trick is to think for yourself and follow the money. The $29 billion a year drug companies make from selling worthless cholesterol lowering medications might have some bearing on why any doctor with the courage to mention they’re useless takes risks with their career.

My hat is off to Dr. Lundell for telling the truth… (And no, I’ve never had my license revoked.)

  14. Chris says:

I understand this is a personal reflection,
    However,
In regards to how cholesterol builds in the arteries, it occurs when the liver is producing too much cholesterol and the receptors on the liver are not signalling to the ‘left over’ cholesterol (LDL) to be synthesised in the liver. How statin medications work, is they stop the production of cholesterol in the liver, therefore allowing the receptors on the Liver to take in the remaining cholesterol and reduce the plaque build up in the arteries. Lipitor (Atorvastatin) has been shown to actually halt the plaque build up, using IVUS (Intravenous ultrasound) technique, the PROVE IT and REVERSAL trials are examples of this. These trials also demonstrated that Lipitor (80mg) actually reduces the risk of a person having a heart attack or stroke, compared to another active ingredient, Pravastatin (40mg), the patients in these trials have already had a heart attack or stroke, and it is about trying to prevent them from having another. To also remove pharmaceutical company bias, one trial was completed by Pfizer (Lipitor producers), the other by BMS (Pravastatin producers). Also, in terms of inflammation, CRP is a marker for inflammation; these trials demonstrated that Lipitor reduced the marker for inflammation by 36%. Please read the attached site, this is well respected site in cardiology. http://www.theheart.org/article/221811.do

If you would like information of trials for those who have not had a heart attack or stroke, Google the ASCOT(all patients are hypertensive, over 55 yrs old, with 3 risk factors for CV disease)and CARDS (diabetic pts aged over 60 years of age). Both trials, using Atorvstatin.

Before you go off your medicines for cholesterol, I implore you to please consult your doctor and read the evidence for yourself.

Best of luck managing your cholesterol and lifestyle.
