Teeth Grinding & Behavioral Problems in Preschoolers

teeth grinding

According to a recent research presented at the 22nd annual meeting of the Associated Professional Sleep Societies, teeth grinding in preschoolers has been linked to withdrawn behaviors.1

The research focused on 1,956 preschoolers, whose parents completed a questionnaire that included frequency of teeth grinding during sleep. According to the study, 36.8% of the preschoolers ground their teeth one or more times per week, and 6.7% of them, four or more times per week.

Furthermore, as the frequency of the tooth grinding increased during sleep, parents were more likely to agree that their children exhibited withdrawn behaviors, did not get involved with others, and that preschool adjustment was difficult.

It is estimated that 14% to 17% of children under the age of seven exhibit teeth grinding during sleep. Although, the study does not make the claim that every preschooler that grinds his or her teeth at night has behavioral problems, there seems to be a dynamic relation between the two. As the study suggests, it will benefit parents to keep a close eye on their children’s sleep patterns and their social behavior.

You can also take steps to protect your child’s teeth from grinding during sleep. If your child is grinding his or her teeth, be sure to consult with your dentist. Although treatment can differ based on the severity of the grinding, your dentist can make a bite guard to be worn at night. A layer of sealant or white tooth filling (composite resin) can also be added to protect the teeth from further wear.
