Nutrients & HealthSave a Life and a Tree
It’s not often that man and nature find themselves in a win-win situation. But that may be the case in the southeastern US when it comes to kudzu. The vining plant was first brought here from Japan over 100 years ago. Its large leaves and fragrant blooms made it a favorite of gardeners.
The “miracle vine” as it was called, was planted throughout the South to help prevent erosion. And it did a great job since it’s nearly impossible to kill. But now that’s turned into a huge problem. Kudzu has taken over 10 million acres of land and is now choking off sunlight to valuable forests.
So how do we win?
A recent study shows that the roots of the vine may improve heart health. When rats were given the root extract they showed improvement in the symptoms of Metabolic syndrome — the condition that leads to diabetes and heart disease.
A major finding was that the test animals’ total cholesterol went down 50%. That’s better than the track record of most statin drugs!
Kudzu extract is already becoming popular as an herbal supplement. If these findings hold up, you’ll be seeing a lot more of it on the shelves of your health food store. I can’t think of a better way to stay healthy and save a tree.
